Edwin silently stood in his crib, which sat besides his mama's bed. Peering over the edge, he smiled. His mama was fast asleep amid the thick lavender coverlets and pillows. She slept lightly...something he had quickly learned from trial and error.
Carefully he pulled himself over the side of the wooden side and slide down to the floor. Escaped from his prison of sorts, Edwin padded across the floor and faced his next trial... the closed door, which his mother had no doubt charmed to squeak.
With more care than the average three year old child placed into opening a door, Edwin slowly pulled it open and sighed with relief as it remained silent. Soon he found himself in the sitting room.
There was no Christmas tree, mainly because his mama had stated it was a waste and Horatio had been unable to convince her otherwise. Still the presents, mainly for him, had been neatly stacked on the table between the sofa, the rocking chair and the other chair.
Edwin had never fully understood and never would know what exactly fascinated his mama when it came to stacks... she used them for everything, papers, books, gifts, even clothing...
Toliver whined and Edwin hushed him. The dog had noticed his journey into the sitting room and had thus followed.
"I'w pweak into youwr to if yw bwe qwit!" Edwin whispered. ((I'll peek into your presents too if you be quiet)) The puppy looked up at his young owner with large brown eyes and seemingly understood, for after being silent.
Edwin carefully lifted the smallest package and shook it. There was a slight rustle and his smile grew.
"Edwin? What in heavens name are you doing?" His mama's tired voice froze him stiff and the package dropped from his hands. Whirling about, he beamed up at her.
"Mwerry Cwrismas!" he cheered. Had his mother not been as tired as she was, he might have received a spanking. But Eglantine was far too tired to do anything to her son, save sigh and drag him back to the bedroom.
"You are suppose to be asleep, Hasi." she muttered, taking his hand in hers. Toliver followed dutifully behind, yawning, as they re-entered the bedroom. Eglantine levitated her son into his crib, waiting until he had lain down before tucking the sky blue covers over him.
"Cwan ywo swing, Mama?" he asked. ((Can you sing?)) Toliver whined from under the crib and Eglantine sighed heavily, sitting on her bed.
"Very well..." she whispered. "Only if you close your eyes."
Edwin instantly shut his eyes as did his puppy.
Eglantine wished that she had used muggle CD players like the intelligent muggles used... cursing the fact that she had allowed her son to become used to her singing him to sleep.
"Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf.
Der Vater hüt't die Schaf.
Die Mutter schüttelt's Bäumelein,
Da fällt herab ein Träumelein.
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf!
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf.
Am Himmel ziehn die Schaf.
Die Sternlein sind die Lämmerlein,
Der Mond, der ist das Schäferlein.
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf!
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf.
So schenk' ich dir ein Schaf.
Mit einer goldnen Schelle fein,
Das soll dein Spielgeselle sein.
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf."
((Translation- Sleep, baby, sleep.
Your father tends the sheep.
Your mother shakes the branches small,
Lovely dreams in showers fall.
Sleep, baby, sleep.
Sleep, baby, sleep.
Across the heavens move the sheep.
The little stars are lambs, I guess,
And the moon is the shepherdess.
Sleep, baby, sleep.
Sleep, baby, sleep.
I'll give to you a sheep.
And it shall have a bell of gold
For you to play with and to hold.
Sleep, baby, sleep.))Finally sleep fell over Edwin like a cloud covers the moon and Christmas morning continued without any small children poking at present.

Eglantine awoke to someone gently lifting her from her bed and kissing her forehead. She smiled softly, knowing full well that only Horatio would dare do something of that nature. His lips soon found hers and she melted within his arms, feeling secure and safe. Finally opening her eyes, she looked deeply into pools of darkest azure and knew without a doubt she had lost her heart to him.
"I heard a young imp awoke you last night, sweet briar..." he murmured. Eglantine sighed.
"A young imp? Whatever would give you that idea, lieb?" Horatio chuckled at her reply, his large hand gently caressing her pale cheek.
He carried her into the sitting room and she sighed as she noticed the breakfast that Horatio had prepared or had prepared and the fact that Edwin had been dressed and sat happily with his puppy on the sofa.
"Sworry awout wawing ya up, Mama!" The little cheeky imp murmured, his eyes hardly showing contrition. ((Sorry about waking you up))
Eglantine raised an eyebrow as Horatio set her down on the couch beside him.
"It is quite alright, love." she smiled, hugging him to her. " Frohe Weihnachten" ((Merry Christmas))
The three of them ate a lovely breakfast of sardines, sausage, porridge, poached eggs, hot chocolate, tea and of course fruit including peaches, plums and apricots.
After his fourth mug of liquid heaven... as Horatio liked to call his favourite drink... the wizard leaned back in his seat and sighed a deep contented sigh.
"Pway wit me!" Edwin shouted, jumping up to wait for Horatio to begin chasing him.
"In a moment, my boy. A rest second, my lad." he murmured, having eaten far more than he probably should have.
Eglantine laughed softly, her usual soft lilting voice almost a song. It was something that Horatio enjoyed hearing... her laugh, something she did far too little, in his opinion and in the humble opinion of Edwin and perhaps even Toliver, although the mind of a canine is shallow and thus deeper thoughts of said nature may not be found...
"You have given him wings, Horatio. Now you must chase him." Eglantine teased, referring to the chocolate Horatio had allowed the young boy to consume in both drink and eating.
"Wings? Oh no, my dear lady. Your son and delight has the very fleetings of Pegasus when sugar has found him." Horatio returned, rising to begin the chase.
Shrieks of laughter filled the entire room to echo out into even the hall as they played. Toliver playfully attacking Horatio in defense of his dear master while Edwin provided the shrieks as he was chased.
No doubt some poor student passed the door to wonder what was taking place within the normally silent rooms of the respected Deputy Headmistress and Head of Gryffindor.
Finally the fish was caught and the subject of presents kept him from springing forth into the pond again.
Firstly, the dear child received his, having little patience to wait upon opening them and Horatio having no patience to see his face upon revealing them.
He received, much to his obvious delight, a child's broom. With every known and unknown safety charm coated onto its slender body. His next package was a box of building blocks with which he was immediately captivated by. From Horatio he received several assorted boxes and bags of various candies and chocolates, both muggle and magical. These were immediately taken by Eglantine, for fear of her sanity, and locked away for slow and gradual use. Edwin was hardly able to show great disappointment over that though as his next present was revealed.
A bike with tricycle training wheels and a shrill bell that he would no doubt allow every breathing soul in Hogwarts to hear within 24 hours was his final large present. There were others, but he paid them no mind as he was far to wrapped up in his bicycle, blocks and broom.
And while Edwin played, Eglantine and Horatio exchanged gifts. For Horatio there was a santa suit, made from silks, velvets and fluffed cotton. He was delighted with the gift and immediately donned it, magically charming it on over his other attire. Several hoo-hoos later he presented Eglantine with her present.
And although the writer tried her level best to write for you, as the reader, what this present was... Horatio and Eglantine refused to allow Merci to do so. And thus it will forever be a mystery.
I can say this much though... she wore it, despite blushing when unwrapping it.
