Calista walked briskly into the classroom and stood behind the desk. She smiled mildly at the assembled students and gave her wand a sharp flick. The words Ancient Runes appeared on the blackboard behind her.

"Audite discipuli." She waited for silence to fall. "Pararesne discere?"

((Apologies for any latin errors, I'm still learning It is meant to say: 'Listen students. Are you ready to learn?'))

She glanced around at the blank faces. Well, that got their attention.

"I asked if you were ready to learn. Because if you're not, just leave. I don't intend to waste the class' time with people who cannot be bothered."
She waited a few seconds, then began the lesson.

"Ancient runes is a study of ancient languages, used in the earlier runic scripts. As such, it is mostly theoretical. There are a variety of languages and runes we shall be studying including; Old Norse, celtic, greek and latin. However, as latin is the closest to our modern alphabet, and useful for most other languages, we shall be learning latin this year."

The four languages appeared on the board, written as bullet points.

"Now, does everyone have Ancient Runes Made Easy? Yes? If not, go and grab a copy from the back. Chapter 1, page 3...Ignoring the preface, we shall begin. First lesson, latin."

Calista sighed quietly. Teaching had never been her chosen career, but at least they had chosen this subject. She would've hated to teach students who were unwilling to learn. Thankfully, her curse-breaking career had given her the oppurtunity to learn and practise many ancient languages.

"Okay, pronounciation. In latin, unlike english, there is no letter J. I is usually used instead, which is pronounced 'ee'. ae is pronounced 'i'."

The combinations of letters appeared on the board of their own accord.

"Both G and C are only pronounced as hard letters for example gate and cat. The letter V in latin is pronounced as a W. The words 'the' and 'an' do not exist, and there is no real word order."

Calista watched the students warily, remembering how dull she'd found lectures at school.

"First thing to learn, the first conjugation."

She waved her wand and the conjugation of the verb 'amo' appeared on the board.

Amare - to love/to like (infinitive)

amo - I love
amas - you love (singular)
amat - he/she/it loves
amamus - we love
amtis - you love (plural)
amant - they love

"Copy that into your books and spend the next fifteen minutes memorising it. I shall test you on it next lesson, so be prepared."

She waved her wand again and the homework appeared underneath the work.

The twins copyied the home work and the notes, finally a no nonsence teacher, Amy liked her and she love ancient runes it was her favorite subject.

Aiden didn't much care for the subject, but he was decent at is thanks to Amy.

Calista realised she should probably make sure the students were actually doing something. They were probably just talking.
She glanced around and stood up.
Time to wander around and be...teacherly.
She stopped in front of the Avalon twins.
"Have you finished the work?"

Nicolas looked around for a clock. He whispered to Diana. "What have we got after this?"

"Care of Magical Creatures," Diana told him automatically.

Calista noticed Diana out of the corner of her eye. She smiled slightly, wondering if the boy next to her was the infamous Nicolas...

Diana caught Calista's eye and smiled as well.

Nicolas sighed. "Ugh, why is the clock so slow!"

"You know, if you did what your suppose to do, you wouldn't be bored." Diana said.

"Whatever."

Calista rolled her eyes. "One moment." She said to the twins, approaching Diana and Nicolas.
"For your information, that clock is the current time. However, if it offends you that much, feel free to head down to Greenwich and ask them to speed up that clock." She folded her arms. "I'm sure they'd be very happy to do so." Sarcasm was evident in her voice.
"What are your names?" She enquired, as knowing Diana's name could blow her cover.

"Diana Casillas," Diana said understanding why Calista asked for it again. "And this is Nico - "

"Nicolas Casillas, Professor," Nicolas cut Diana off. He smiled at Calista.

Diana knew that look that Nicoals was giving her. Looked like someone had a teacher crush...

Ah, so this was Nicolas.
Calista kept her thoughts in her head, and her expression infanthomable. Although quite why he was smiling at her, she had no idea.
"Very well. And next time you wish to complain about my subject either do so outside, or in a quieter voice so I cannot hear you."
Nobody insulted ancient runes...at least not while she was in the room.
Calista turned and walked back to the twins.

"Yes, Professor," Nicolas bowed. "What?" Nicolas said when he met Diana's eyes.

"You like her don't you?"

"No, I just think it's about time Hogwarts has a decent looking Professor." Nicolas said. "How much time do we have left?"

"30 minutes." Diana said.

"Wonderful!" Nicolas said, but there was no sacrastism in his voice.

Calista halted in front of the twins desk. Did he just bow?!

Morgana raised her hand tentitively.
"Miss, I'm confused." she began, not sure whether to wait to be asked or not. She decided to continue. "If there is no soft 'c' in latin, how did the Romans pronounce Ceasar - and why do we pronounce it as Ceasar?"
She wasn't sure whether that had made sense, but it had in her head so she waited for an answer.

Raven shyly entered the class; she was late since she had just been to the infirmary to get her scrape covered. Walking into the class she immediately felt awkward and sat down in the back, hoping no one noticed her. She then turned her attention to the teacher.

Calista turned towards the student who had asked the question. She noticed a student slip in late, and decided to deal with that later.
"The Romans would pronounce it as K-ai-ser, but we probably pronounce it differently because it sounds more English."
She smiled. "Of course, Julius Ceasar would be ee-u-lius K-ai-ser, so we've changed it quite a lot. Does that answer your question, Miss...?"

"Willow" Morgana answered nervously. "Yes miss, thank you."

Nicolas pointed at the Ravenclaw. "Who is she?"

Diana shrugged. "I don't know..."

"Hello," Diana said turning to the Ravenclaw, "I'm Diana Casillas."

"Hi," Morgana answered guardedly, "I'm Morgana...Morgana Willow."

She wasn't really good in social situations, but she wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to meet new people. Hoping she wouldn't make a fool of herself before she had even begun, she smiled at the Diana.

"Pleasure to meet you Morgana." Diana smiled at the girl.

"This is my cousin, Nicolas." Diana hit bumped Nicolas.

"Si, Hola." He managed out.

Calista walked between the desks, stopping in front of the late student.
"What is your name Miss...? And do you have a reason for being late to my class?"

"My name is Raven, and yes I had to go to the Infirmary," Raven said honestly hoping the professor would believe her.

Calista nodded. "Very well. Important details are on the board. You'll need to copy down that declension and memorise it."

"Ok," Raven replied as she got out a piece of parchment and her quill. She copied down everything she was suppose to.
