Why just snakes?

This is really more of a question than anything but what the duck(lol), may as well open it to debate...

Parseltongue. We are all familiar with the whole talking to snakes concept.

But are there other "____tongues" for other animals?
I mean, why should snakes be the only ones that wizards can talk to? Pettigrew talked to rats when he was in his animagus form didn't he? Does that have a special name? And could he talk to them when human?

So shouldn't there really be wizards talking to and understanding other species of animal, not just snakes?

I don't know. It think snakes are just special. Coz' I mean, it would lessen your cool factor...

Fine I'll answer for real. Yes, snakes are significant in J. K. Rowling's world. She uses it to reproduce evil especially by pairing it up with Voldy. Usually in literature, snakes are portrayed as the fallen angel (or in other words the devil) so I think that J. K. Rowling is just bringing in the snake imagery to show how inhuman and evil Voldemort is.

Animagi can speak to other animals...
